I’m Heinz. After retiring from a career in engineering, I began searching for something new—a creative challenge that would be both interesting and rewarding.
I discovered pottery and with books, videos, and plenty of experimentation, I taught myself the fundamentals of working with clay.
Then I discovered crystalline glazing, and something immediately clicked. Crystalline glazing is where art and science meet. Creating the spectacular crystals that grow across the surface of a piece requires an understanding of chemistry, precision, patience, and a willingness to accept the unexpected. Each firing is a carefully controlled experiment, yet the kiln always has the final word.
For someone with an engineering background and a love for creative exploration, crystalline pottery felt like a natural fit. It allows me to combine technical precision with artistic expression—and every finished piece is a unique discovery.
My Ceramic Kiln

When I set up my studio, I built nearly everything needed to create crystalline porcelain.
Crystalline glazes demand very precise temperature control, and commercially available kilns rarely provide these requirements. I designed and built a kiln specifically for the demanding process of crystalline glazes. Operating at temperatures up to 1300°C (2370°F) requires enhanced insulation, a custom control system and highly accurate temperature sensing elements.

The first Vase
Frieder, my Friend and I created this vase as a gift for our dear friend Ursula while she was undergoing physical therapy. We wanted to make something special to lift her spirits and brighten the challenging time for her.

Northwest Ceramics Showcase
The Northwest Ceramic Showcase is one of the largest all-ceramics exhibitions in the United States. Hosted annually by the Oregon Potters Association at the Oregon Convention Center, the event is held during the third weekend of April.Every year over ten thousand visitors come to see the work of nearly 200 ceramic artists from across the region displaying an extraordinary collection of handcrafted work, showcasing exceptional artistry, creativity, and craftsmanship. Whether you are a collector, fellow artist, or simply appreciate fine ceramics, the Showcase offers an inspiring opportunity to experience the remarkable diversity and quality of contemporary ceramic art.
Annual Event
at Portland Nursery
For many years, Portland Nursery has hosted the annual Summer Fair, featuring the work of more than 50 ceramic artists. Held each July, the event has become a favorite destination for pottery enthusiasts throughout the greater Portland area.The Summer Fair provides members of the Oregon Potters Association with an opportunity to showcase their latest ceramic creations, offering visitors a diverse collection of functional pottery, decorative pieces, sculpture, and fine ceramic art.
Christmas '25
This was created for the annual OPA Christmas Showcase at Pioneer Place in downtown Portland. More than 50 exhibitors present their work throughout the month of December.
